Ethical Business

At The Railway, we believe passionately that running a good business is impossible without ensuring that high ethical standards are practised at every level of the company’s day-to-day running. We think that businesses should act responsibly with a moral code of conduct – driven by strong values and a sense of contribution towards society, not just focussed on money, growth and greed.

Our buying policy
We source all our food ethically and responsibly – all our suppliers are small local independent farmers, growers and producers, and small independent brands. We never buy anything from big multinationals. By placing regular orders with small farms and producers, we are enabling them to expand and grow their businesses in turn.

Currently 80% of all our fresh produce comes from the South West, and we’re striving to increase this to keep our food miles as low as possible. We grow some of our seasonal vegetables, bred some of our delicious meat and even catch some of the fish you might find on the special board.

We try our hardest to never air freight anything when possible, and we make sure our suppliers get their produce to us in the most efficient way possible – for example, one of our Chef also collects our Meat on his way to work, saving a journey.

We serve sustainable, local Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fish whenever possible and fully support Hugh’s fish fight

Our meat comes from small local farms with high standards of animal welfare.

We give Free water at the table to eliminate ‘water miles’ and wastage of glass – in fact you don’t need to buy a bottle of water as we give it to you for free

Wherever possible we don’t buy any packaged good !

Our energy policy
We are passionate about treating the environment with respect – we use methods that are groundbreaking within the restaurant trade. We recycle and re-use kitchen waste, tin, paper, card, cardboard and glass. We compost all our food waste. We use green cleaning products and keep a beady eye on all our energy use.

Our links with the local community
The Railway isn’t just a great place to enjoy good Local food and drink – we work hard to foster strong links between the pub, local residents and schools. Soon our chefs would be training local school cooks to devise menus and make healthy, delicious meals, using produce from our suppliers

And this is only the start..
